The article author examines several hypotheses of the Russian Ruble origin and proves that the first currency system in the world was based on the use of the silver, and not gold, standard. The researcher dwells on the Russian gold mining history, makes a comparative analysis and suggests a definition for the modern monetary system. It is defined as an absolute unity of relationships that exist in the banking, monetary and financial systems.
